Forklift Won't Move (But Powers On)

An electric forklift that powers on but won't move usually has the parking brake on, an open seat/deadman switch, a direction-selector fault, a tripped controller, or a contactor/drive-motor problem. Check the interlocks first.

— Reviewed by the ForkliftIQ technical team

When the dash lights up but the forklift will not drive, the traction circuit is being blocked — most often by a safety interlock (seat switch, parking brake, direction selector) rather than a major failure. Check the interlocks and fault codes before suspecting the motor or controller.

Technician diagnosing an electric forklift that powers on but will not drive, checking controller and interlocks

Most likely causes

Parking brake on or seat switch open — Most trucks will not drive with the park brake engaged or with no weight on the seat/deadman switch.
Direction (FNR) selector fault — A faulty forward/neutral/reverse switch leaves the truck in neutral so it will not move.
Controller fault or cutout — A tripped or faulted motor controller, usually with a logged code, cuts traction power.
Main contactor not closing — A worn or unpowered main/line contactor will not connect the battery to the drive circuit.
Drive motor or wiring fault — A failed drive motor or a broken high-current connection stops drive even when everything else is healthy.

How to diagnose it

1
Confirm the parking brake is off and the operator is properly seated so the seat/deadman switch is made.
2
Check the direction selector works in both forward and reverse.
3
Read the controller fault codes — most no-drive faults are logged.
4
Listen for the main contactor to click on a drive command; if silent, check its coil, fuse and connections.
5
Check high-current connections at the battery, contactor and drive motor.
6
If interlocks, contactor and wiring are good, test the drive motor and controller output.
⚠ Safety: Before testing drive, make sure the path is clear and the wheels are chocked if the truck is raised — a forklift that suddenly gets drive can lurch.

FAQ

Why won't my forklift move but it powers on?
Usually a safety interlock — parking brake on, no weight on the seat switch, or a direction-selector fault — or a tripped controller or contactor. Check the interlocks and fault codes first.
Can a seat switch stop a forklift from moving?
Yes — most forklifts will not drive unless the operator-presence (seat/deadman) switch is made; a faulty seat switch is a common no-drive cause.
Why does my forklift have power but no drive?
Power to the dash but no drive points to the traction circuit being blocked — an interlock, a non-closing main contactor, a controller fault, or a drive-motor problem.
How do I know if my forklift contactor is bad?
If it does not click on a drive command, or clicks but the truck still will not move, suspect the main contactor — check its coil voltage, contacts and connections.
