Forklift Won't Lift

A forklift that won't lift the load usually has low or wrong hydraulic oil, an overload, a worn lift pump, a stuck control valve, or a clogged filter. Check oil and load first.

A forklift that runs but won't raise the forks is almost always a hydraulic-lift problem, not an engine or traction fault. The usual causes are low hydraulic oil, an overloaded mast, a tired lift pump, a stuck control valve or solenoid, or a clogged suction filter. Check the simple things before opening the hydraulics.

Figure 1: Diagnosing lift — steps from this page (indicative).
Figure summary: Follow the diagnostic steps in order, working from the cheapest, most likely cause first and confirming with a test before replacing parts.
Low or wrong hydraulic oil — Low fluid or the wrong grade starves the lift circuit, so the mast will not raise or only lifts partway.
Overload beyond capacity — Trying to lift more than the truck's rated capacity, especially at height, simply will not move the mast.
Worn hydraulic pump — A worn lift pump cannot build enough pressure to raise a load, even if it idles fine empty.
Stuck control valve or relief valve — A stuck control-valve spool, lift solenoid, or a relief valve set too low dumps pressure instead of lifting.
Clogged suction filter — A blocked hydraulic filter or strainer starves the pump and weakens or kills lift.

How to diagnose it

1
Check the hydraulic oil level and condition first — low or dirty oil is the most common cause.
2
Confirm the load is within the truck's rated capacity at that lift height.
3
Listen to the pump under a lift command — a strained or whining pump points to pressure loss or a blocked filter.
4
Check the lift control valve, solenoid and relief-valve setting for sticking or a low setting.
5
Inspect the hydraulic filter or strainer for clogging.
6
If oil, filter and valve are good but pressure is low, suspect a worn pump.
⚠ Safety: Never get under raised forks during diagnosis, and never exceed the rated capacity to force a lift — block the mast and lower any load before working.

FAQ

Why won't my forklift lift?
Usually low or wrong hydraulic oil, an overload, a worn lift pump, a stuck control valve or solenoid, or a clogged filter. Check oil level and load first.
Why does my forklift lift slowly or only partway?
Partial lift usually means low oil, a clogged suction filter, a tiring pump, or a relief valve dumping pressure early.
Can low hydraulic fluid stop a forklift from lifting?
Yes — the lift system is hydraulic, so low or aerated oil is one of the most common reasons a mast will not raise.
Why does my forklift lift empty but not with a load?
Lifting empty but stalling under load points to a pump that can no longer build full pressure, or a relief valve set too low.
