Manual Pallet Jack Not Lifting — Troubleshooting

When a hand pallet truck will not raise, start by identifying whether the problem is outside the hydraulic unit, caused by trapped air, or inside the pump. This page uses two external demonstrations to make that decision visible while keeping model-specific settings in the correct manual.

A jack that does not lift at all, lifts only part way, or drops back down can share the same outward symptom but need a different repair. Look first for an unloaded, fully lowered truck, visible oil leakage, bent linkage, a control lever that does not reach all three positions, or a handle that binds.

Safety first: Unload the pallet truck, lower the forks fully, park on a level surface and secure it against movement. Do not work under raised forks. Clean spilled hydraulic oil promptly and keep dirt out of the open pump.

Quick diagnostic order

Record the make, model, serial number and pump casting or label before ordering parts.

Inspect the frame, forks, rollers, handle, linkage and pump exterior. A structural defect or active leak needs repair before repeated pumping.

Confirm the control lever actually moves the release linkage through lower, neutral and raise. A loose chain or incorrect adjustment can imitate a pump fault.

If the exact manual allows it, perform its air-purge routine and recheck unloaded lift and lowering.

If the jack still will not lift, the next checks are model-specific: oil level and type, valve contamination, worn seals, piston condition or internal pump damage.

0:09–0:36: the lower-control position and handle strokes are used to purge trapped air.
0:38–1:04: the fill-plug area and oil level are checked on this AC-series unit.
1:18–2:24: the linkage is disconnected so handle binding can be separated from a pump fault.

0:01–0:42: the reservoir fill point is opened, the level is checked, and the plug is replaced.
0:43–1:06: the control is held in lower while the handle is cycled through full strokes.
1:07–1:23: the control returns to lift for a function check.

Use boundary: Bleeding does not repair an external leak, damaged seal, scored piston, stuck valve or incorrect adjustment. If the symptom returns, stop and locate the underlying fault.

When bleeding is not the answer

Oil appearing around the ram or pump piston, a handle that falls without returning, a jack that rises unloaded but not under a rated test, or a symptom that returns after purging points to a mechanical or hydraulic defect. Do not keep adding oil or adjusting the release linkage by guesswork.
